Having Wi-Fi Issues In Singapore During Conferences?

Wi-Fi Issues In Venues in Singapore

Solutions on making your conference in Singapore with live-stream fuss-free

A research done by Speedtest.net in 2017 has shown that Singapore has some of the fastest internet speeds in the world. Mothership’s article states that an average download speed in Singapore clocks at around 185mbps while upload speeds hovers around 192mbps.

A report by Singapore Business Review (SBR) is titled ‘Singapore Has The Fastest Fixed Broadband Speed In The World’ beating 132 countries.

“So why are we having issues in the landscape of live-streaming? ”

Be it a 200 pax conference in a hotel or organising a webinar in an office, we have encountered numerous enquiries asking if a venue’s internet speed can support a live-stream in high definition.

Most hotels in Singapore are not brand new. And with brand new hotels, the owners may not see an invested interest in building a solid internet foundation. It is more viable to build more rooms generating substantial revenue to something as intangible as Internet.

Solution 1: Dedicated Wi-Fi

In 2016, the inaugural Fintech Festival was held in Singapore and the Hackcelerator was organised at the Red Dot Museum. The iconic red coloured building in Tanjong Pagar was built in 1928 and subsequently, internet connection was introduced to the building of offices and event space.

In order to facilitate the 500 pax strong audience and assuming each individual would carry one laptop and one mobile phone, we estimated an average of 800 devices connecting to the internet via wirelessly during the conference.

The skeptic would say not all devices are connected at the same time so let’s bring that number from 800 devices to a conservative 500 devices. Even when there are 500 devices, this would possibly overload the network (and let’s not discount the fact that some public networks are shared with public).

We brought in an ISP, which in this case was MyRepublic to provide dedicated internet connection to Red Dot Museum to support 1000 devices with a speed of 1GBPS throughout the conference. An internet specialist was on site to monitor speeds and ensure the network do not overload.

Solution 2: The (Not Necessarily) Cheaper Solution

One could suggest that with 4G speeds in Singapore being the world’s fastest (see report from Business Insider Singapore), you could switch your mobile phone hotspot on (or Pocket Wifi), connect to a laptop and operate a live-stream.

That’s true. However, the truth about 4G speeds is they are dependent on the location and if your hotel of choosing is in the heart of Singapore, it will fluctuate based on usage as well as how many people are logging on to data.

Each Pocket Wifi allows up to 10 devices to connect and remember to keep a charger connected to the device at all time.

“With the influx of the crowd going unto social media during lunch, you might want to avoid using 4G routers during this time.”

Unless you are boosting an unlimited data plan, you might want to consider not volunteering your device as the hotspot.’

Solution 3: The Middle Ground

Most small to medium size conferences don’t have the budget to allocate S$5,000.00 and above for dedicated internet. This does not cover the ISP cost to allocate extra bandwidth to the location as well.

That’s why we started introducing network bonding devices for our conferences.

For clients who are looking to have a global reach via web streaming, this is one of the most popular options.

Top 5 Reasons To Get The New Samsung Galaxy S10 / S10+ For Your Small to Medium Business

Top 5 Reasons To Get The New Samsung Galaxy S10 / S10+ For Your Small to Medium Business

How the latest flagship device from the Korean Titan work for your SME.

There are 4 new additions this year to the Samsung Galaxy line with the S10, S10, S10+ and S10 5G as well as the much anticipated Galaxy Fold.

We take a look at how the newest and greatest phones from the Korean titan will help streamline your business:

1. Storage

Image of The perfect Galaxy Phone

For the first time in the tech world, a mobile phone debut with 1TB of storage. That is 60 million one-word documents or 17,000 hours of audio.
If you do not subscribe to cloud storage such as Dropbox and Google Drive, you can possibly store all of your documents into your phone.

Another advantage of such large local storage will work well where internet connectivity is slow. There will not be an issue in Singapore since our
4G speeds are one of the best in the world but if there is ever a lift breakdown, those locally saved cat videos will come in handy.

2: Rear Facing Triple Lens Setup

While triple camera lens devices have been in the market such as the Huawei’s P20 Pro Smartphone, it is not rocket science that Samsung joins on the bandwagon. The S10 itself features triple setup cameras will be a huge bonus for industries requiring ultra wide shots.

Instead of stitching together a photo in panoramic mode, the ultra wide lens could possibly capture the entire landscape.

However, if camera is a main essential for you, we recommend you check out the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3XL where their single lens setup is the leading camera phone.

3: Wi-Fi 6

Image of Wifi 6

Photo from The Verge

While spec bumps are common in new models, a lot of chatter focuses on the processor speed or RAM (The S10 Plus has 12GB of RAM), Wi-Fi 6 is possibly one of the underdogs factor that is overlooked.

As The Verge reports it, the latest and greatest Wi-Fi 6 has speeds of 9.6Gbps, up from 3.5Gbps from Wi-Fi 5 (or more commonly known as 802.11AC).

Although real world 4G use may not utilize such speeds, it will be an eye opener to see the various applications. For the events and conferences, you could possibly stream a HD video wirelessly instead of using cables.

4: Headphone Jack (gasps!)

Samsung opted to keep the headphone jack or audio input. Even the OnePlus 6T (who deem themselves as a company who listens to their community) have removed the 3.5mm headphone jack in their latest flagship.

One of the biggest advantages of the headphone jack is call clarity. For companies who uses a lot of calls, the benefits of the headphone jack and wired earphones are tremendous. They offer the best voice and since it is wired, you will never have to worry about bluetooth signal drops.

The only wireless earphones that is close to the wired earphones is the Apple Airpods but they work best with iOS.

5: The New One UI

Image of One UI by Samsung

Samsung has been known for the TouchWiz that would slow the phone down or unnecessary apps that are preinstalled unto their phones. Many Android users favour the ‘pure’ Android experience offered by Google themselves in the Pixel phones.

The One UI focuses on a one-handed use, thus the name. It is a refreshing change from the years of TouchWiz with the interface looking much cleaner. New users will find the software more intuitive, as well as the ease of using the larger devices with one hand.

Where to Get

The S10 and S10 Plus are expected to reach Singapore in March 2019 and major telcos are already registering sign ups for the phone.

Click on the below links to register on their websites and early adopters will receive the newly launched Galaxy Buds as well as the Wireless Duo charger (valued at S$386.00)
